CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the hundreds of organic elements that contribute to the benefits of cannabis called cannabinoids. CBD can be found in both hemp and marijuana but in very different quantities. CBD is found in both marijuana and in hemp plants in the same way certain nutrients can be found in different fruits or vegetables. These plants share characteristics because they are related, but as of now, hemp has fewer restrictions that allow us to share the benefits of CBD with you.
Another popular cannabinoid shared by these two plants is tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. THC is what has made marijuana controversial and illegal in many states and countries around the world. THC is known for giving that “high” effect to an individual and marijuana has a very high content of it. In contrast, CBD products derived from hemp usually contain a minute amount of THC, less than 0.3%, which has allowed them to be legalized in the U.S for consumption on a federal level.
